Happy Mother's Day from Old Kinderhook! In honor of this holiday, we want to share with you some history about how Mother's Day began. Do you know when Mother's Day started and why? We've got the answers!
Mother's Day dates back to the ancient Greeks and Romans, who held festivals in honor of the mother goddesses Rhea and Cybele. However, the clearest modern precedent for the holiday is the early Christian festival in Europe known as "Mothering Sunday," where the faithful would return to their "mother church" (the main church in the vicinity of their home) for a special service. Over time the tradition shifted to a more secular holiday where children would present their mothers with flowers and other tokens of appreciation.
In the mid-19th century, Ann Reeves Jarvis of West Virginia helped start "Mother's Day Work Clubs" to teach local women how to properly care for their children. The clubs later became a unifying force in a region of the country still divided over the Civil War. In 1868, Jarvis organized "Mother's Friendship Day" at which mothers gathered with former Union and Confederate soldiers to promote reconciliation. In 1870, abolitionist and suffragette Julia Ward Howe wrote the "Mother's Day Proclamation," a call to action that asked mothers to unite in promoting world peace. In 1873, she campaigned for a "Mother's Peace Day" to be celebrated every June 2. The official Mother's Day holiday arose in 1905, following the death of Anna Jarvis' mother. She conceived the day as a way of honoring the sacrifices mothers made for their children. After gaining financial backing from a Philadelphia department store owner named John Wanamaker, she organized the first official Mother's Day celebration at a Methodist church in 1908. The same day, thousands of people attended a Mother's Day event at one of Wanamaker's retail stores in Philadelphia. Mother's Day officially became a national holiday in 1914.

The bar staff at this place for events in New York was professional and their drinks ensured us a fun night in the city. I can't wait to go back. Most of the negative elements of going to a more popular place are avoided here; the staff was really mature and respectful.
